My Views on Increasing Periods of PE Class in Primary School.
In Japan, schools have PE classes every day. In America, 80% chilren take part in PE classes or extra curriculum activities on physical training. In France, more than 30% of time is used in PE classes. People from these countries always catch trophies in competitive sport as a result. Obviously, the importance of physical education is no less than any other subjects in regular curriculum. Besides, with the obesity at all time high, schools and society alike are encouraging children take part in activities that require physical involvement. According to the research by Physical Activity Council, children who have physical education are less than sedentary and participate in more activities outside of school. So I strongly believe that increasing periods of PE class in primary school is very necessary.
Then, what are the benefits of physical education?
First of all, physical education develops one’s learning ability. Being physically active means strengthening one’s cognitive processes and sharpening one’s skills as a result. A survey shows that children who are physically fit and active often do better in the class than those who aren’t active. Because physical education increases blood flow and oxygen to the brain and may boost the growth of nerve cells in the hippocampus—the brain’s center in charge of learning and memory.
As an English teacher, I’ve already introduced several physical games in teaching new words in my classes, such as running and shooting. Students would learn faster and better in this way than traditional sedentary learning.
Second, physical education fuels self-confidence. Kids when overweight tend to blend to the wallpaper, often being ignored by others. They’re usually the targets of verbal abuse and teasing. When they engage in physical activities, they become fit and attractive which helps to build their self-confidence.
What’s more, physical education cultivates students “I can do” mentality which helps students to gradually establish the involvement of courage and confidence.
Now I would like to share my experience with you. One of my students in Grade five, he shows no interesting in learning English. He often bows his head and reads books in my class. He always stands still when questions come to him. In my opinion, he may think he is totally a loser in learning English. So he gives up.
Once, he had a PE class. I saw smile and confidence on his face. I realized that in PE class, teacher adopted a gradual approach, step by step to develop students to overcome difficulties. Also, teachers conveyed “believe that you will be more gratifying process” of information. This student must find the “I can do” mentality in PE class.
Finally, physical education releases stress. Often time, students, particular in their primary school, face various kinds of pressure and experience stress and anxiety. Participation in physical activities can act as a stress buster for them. Statistics have revealed that when a person exercises, the stress get reduced.
As can be seen, physical education contributes so much towards making a child grow into an intelligent, confident, healthy and fit adult. It can be rightly said that it is not just for individual growth, but for the improvement of our society. So physical education should be made an important part of primary school curriculum.
